Government plans to pave the 350 mile road from Georgetown, its coastal capital, to its southern border are expected to open Guyana to booming trade with neighboring Brazil, a buying super power in South America with 200 times the population of Guyana.

According to anthropologist Frank Salomon, "They (the people of Rapaz) feel that they must protect the khipu collection for the same reason we that feel we have to defend the physical original of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Cacao is a labor-intensive crop, each pod is sliced open with a machete, then the beans are scooped out by hand, the same process harvesters used in the 18th century. Cacao growers are trying to revive the industry in face of challenges such as crop plagues, plantation seizures and government intimidation.

Equally disturbing is the level of impunity, corruption and incompetency in the Venezuelan judicial system. OVV reports that 91% of crimes go unsolved in Venezuela.

She has worked as a dancer for over five years and is considered to have one of the best routines, usually saved for the end of the night. ....Despite her confidence in her ability to dance, Alejandra is self conscious about her weight and is constantly crash dieting. She recently spent an entire night's wages on a constricting undershirt advertised to slim one's waistline when worn regularly. At 30-years-old and after giving birth to her daughters, she says it is a lot harder to keep weight off than it was when she was younger.

Maximo was fatally shot outside of his cousins' home in Belen, a red zone heavily controlled by Colombian narco-traffickers. Police investigators have not solved nor do they claim to have any leads on Maximo's murder. His case, like the majority of other red zone killings in Belen, will most likely go unsolved. Police corruption and incompetence often leads families to resort to taking justice into their own hands, perpetuating street violence in their community.

"No one knew Maximo [middle name, last names] like I did, no one can miss Maximo [middle name, last names] like I do," 'Yati' said through tears. "He was my best friend, my brother."

Through tears, his male cousins and closest friends respectfully poured bottles of Venezuelan rum over his casket as their way of honoring him in their last moments with his body.

  • Family and friends make homage to a motorizado shot down in the La Pastora (The Shepherd) slum in Caracas, Venezuela by resting his casket on motorcycles and revving their engines while other motorizados make a series of laps around the cemetery at high speed, revving their engines as well, and occasionally riding on one wheel. Although a great percentage of motorizados work honestly, the profession is often criminalized because of its association with delinquent behavior. The agility of motorcycles makes them the preferred get-away vehicle for criminals involved in robberies, kidnappings and murders. Motorizados often find themselves victims of criminal activity as well, motorcycle theft is rampant in Caracas and newspapers report murders of motorizados weekly.
