CARACAS, VENEZUELA - OCTOBER 17, 2017: Members of a street gang of young boys wait for employees of a large shopping center to take the day’s trash out to the outside dumpster, so that the boys can scavenge in it for discarded food and recyclables. A growing number of young boys are leaving their homes outside of the city to live in the streets of Caracas where it is easier for them to attain food. They join street gangs with other homeless youth, and engage in knife fights in order to expand and defend their territories and control over sought after areas for panhandling and picking through garbage. Several young gang members interviewed by The New York Times said they prefer to live in the streets, despite the danger - because they eat better than they could living at home with their families.
